Overview
Sky Builders is an immersive, child-centered exhibition inspired by the sculptural language of David Smith. The project translates his industrial steel sculptures into a colorful, interactive environment where children explore balance, verticality, and negative space through movement and play.
Challenge
To reinterpret modernist sculpture in a way that is accessible and engaging for children by transforming traditional gallery viewing into an experiential learning environment.
Goal
David Smith’s work is often perceived as heavy, industrial, and serious. The challenge was translating those concepts into a playful, safe, and interactive experience while still preserving the core sculptural ideas of structure, balance, and spatial composition.
Results
The project presents a cohesive exhibition system including an interactive gallery experience, custom typeface inspired by sculptural forms, and supporting materials such as brochures and tickets. The design demonstrates how modern sculpture can be reimagined as a participatory environment for younger audiences.
